Frequently asked questions
Is membership the same as certification?
No. Membership gives you access to Portcullis methods, guidance and support. Certification is a separate, evidence-based assessment against the Portcullis Standard.
Most businesses join as members first, strengthen their controls, then apply for certification.
How long does certification last?
Certification is valid for 12 months from the date of issue. It must be renewed each year through a renewal assessment to remain active on the verification register.
What happens if we do not pass?
You receive a clear list of non-conformities and a period to put corrective action in place. Once the evidence shows the gaps are closed, certification can be issued.
Certification is not issued while a critical control remains unmet.
Can multi-site businesses apply?
Yes. The certification scope sets out which sites and activities are covered. Pricing for multi-site businesses reflects the scope and the number of locations assessed.
Is pricing based on turnover?
No. Pricing is based on the number of employees, which is a fairer guide to the size of the assessment. It may vary with certification scope, locations and operational complexity.
Can international companies apply?
Portcullis is designed first for UK freight businesses. International and overseas-headquartered organisations with UK operations are welcome to enquire; scope and pricing are agreed case by case.
